Elizabeth is situated on the South-East coast of South Africa, in the
Eastern Cape Province. Together with surrounding areas Port Elizabeth
forms part of the Nelson Mandela Metropole. This area of South Africa
was the centre of the liberation struggle, and is the ancestral home
of the Xhosa, the tribe of Nelson Mandela, and many other countless
liberation heroes. Although pre-liberation history, and industry has
focussed on Cape Town to the West, Durban to the East, and Johannesburg
and Pretoria,to the North - during recent times, industry has boomed
with the building of an industrial deep-water harbour at Coega, tourism
has rocketed in the form of traditional malaria free safaris, to watersports,
eco-tourism, political tourism, and the dream of the Mandela statue,
one day to be erected on an island out to sea, we are perhaps led to
believe. |
